In WA, you can get your learner’s permit at 16, and that is the perfect time to start. Starting early gives you plenty of time to get your 50 supervised hours (including 5 at night) without feeling rushed. Automatic lessons are a great way to get those initial hours up quickly and safely.

We also see many mature-aged learners who are looking to get their licence for the first time or are switching from an overseas licence. Automatic is often the preferred choice for these students as it’s the most straightforward path to getting on the road.

Generally speaking, having an automatic-only licence doesn’t negatively impact your insurance premiums. Insurance companies in Australia focus more on your age, the type of car you're driving, and your claims history rather than the transmission type of your licence.

The main thing is ensuring you are always driving within your licence conditions. As long as you stay in an automatic vehicle, your insurance will be fully valid. If you were to drive a manual with an automatic licence, you’d be unlicenced and your insurance would be void.
